Introduction New year's wishes. We all send each other cards for Christmas, New Year or just for fun. But who knew that this was a tradition that started in the seventeenth century? As of the 17th century, it was possible to buy printed sheets with a decorative border and blank space to write a message by hand. Usually, the decorative edge is an allegorical print, a frame with flowers, or city views. These prints are also called 'kransen' (garlands, wreaths). They had an oval wreath shape as decoration. The empty sheets are on their own a feast for the eye:

Calligraphy. These cards were read aloud by children and young adults to the family. This was a way to honour their (grand)parents, uncles and aunts. When filled in, they're exceptional, unique objects. Here, the most beautiful calligraphy is shown. Cards were prepared for the New Year, Christmas, Pentecost, Easter, birthdays, and - within the Netherlands - for the local fair. If the kids did a good job, they received some extra money to buy something nice. Some cards only show general new year poems, but others also include verses for birthdays, marriage, Easter, Pentecost etc.

3

As children compiled them at school, usually the teacher helped them out. Sometimes books with calligraphy examples were used, and several of such books are known. Sometimes, teachers helped with the most complex calligraphy pieces.

Earliest references. The first mention of a wish card in literature is in Joannes le Francq van Berkhey’s Natuurlyke historie van Holland, fom 1776. It is explicitly mentioned that the writing of wish cards at school was encouraged to improve the students' penmanship. Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken mention in Economische liedjes (1781) that a school child gives such a wish card to her mother as well. The earliest wish cards are from the seventeenth century. Their production peak is between 1760-1830. After 1860 the size of the cards changed, as they became smaller and smaller and ended in the size of current Christmas cards (although nowadays these tend to get bigger and bigger again). In her seminal handbook Decoratieve prenten met geschreven wensen, Leontine BuijnstersSmets documents that the oldest wish card is a Christmas letter of Aeltjes van Loosens, dating from 1659. Nevertheless, we are proud to present our oldest wish card from around 1646 (see here right).

Circulation. Most wish cards were written by children between 7 and 14 years old. As the card had to be bought, the tradition was mainly popular in the more wealthy families. The most known publishers were established in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The cards were found the most in the Provinces North and South Holland, followed by Friesland, Utrecht, and the Zuiderzee.

4

Varieties of Wish Cards. The most common wish cards are the New Year Wishes, followed by the wishes for Christian holidays such as Christmas, Pentecost, and Easter.

5

There are also wish cards for birthdays. Lastly, there were the general blessings, called zegenwensen.

Fair wish cards. Fair wish cards belong to their own category: children were hoping for an extra fee to go to the fair. These cards are only known in The Netherlands, possibly because all classes attended Dutch fairs, the higher and the lower.

6

Technique. The technique of the wish cards varies between engraving, etching and lithography, sometimes hand-coloured. Some of the publishers of our wish cards are: Hendrik Moolenijzer, Wed. J. Ratelband and J Brouwer on the Rooze Gragt Zuyd-Zyde in the Bybeldrukkerye, Mindermann & Comp. A, Erve J. van Egmont Reguliers Breestraat and T.I. Wijnhoven Hendriksen. These were situated in Amsterdam. Other printers are Glenisson & Van Genechten in Belgium, Turnhout and firma Joseph Scholz in Mainz.

Corporative printed New Years wishes. Except for the handwritten New Year's cards, there are also new year wishes with printed text. These are not dissimilar from the current holiday cards you receive from the newspaper delivery (wo)men. These prints were given out by people of certain professions to raise some extra funds. For example the vuilnismannen - waste collectors - (then known as askarremannen), klokkenluiders - bell ringers, lantaarnopstekers - lamp lighters, nachtwachten - night watchers, porders - Knocker-ups, straatvegers - street weepers, etc.

7

Conclusion. The wish cards are unique printed matter. The prints are seen as folk or popular art. One sees the familiar art movements reflected in the wish cards, such as classicism, romanticism, biedermeijer etc. Every wish card is a unique item with personality, and every card expresses a special time frame. The wish cards provide information on the 18th and 19th-century school customs. They are popular and personal, showing us glimpses of our ancestors' lives through these beautiful frames of folk art. Arine van der Lely – van der Steur.

[Nieuwjaarswens / New Year Wishes] Louijssen. Ik wensch VE: bij desen mijn Vader en Moeder..., 1646?. New Year's wishes to his father and mother. In the national archive in The Hague there is only one Louijssen that matches the period, Cornelis Louijssen of Schouwen, Southern Netherlands. [This Cornelis was accused in 1647 of the death of Jean Fontaine: by throwing a tin glass to his head, Cornelis made Fontaine fall from the stairs. Because of the injuries the latter died a couple of days later. The document testifies the end of the prison time of Louijssen in 1652, following a letter asking for his remission.] We cannot be sure if Philippus had some relationship with Cornelis, further archival research is needed. Some calligraphic elements have been designed to decorate the manuscript as a frame to the actual text of the card. On the bottom especially, on the left and on the right, two animal-like figures enclose the signature and the date of the letter: 'VE Dienst Willingen Soon / Philippus Louijssen: / 1646.' The wishes begin with the dedication: 'Ik wensch VE: bij desen mijn Vader en Moeder eer baer / geluk en Voorsyoet in delen Nieuwe Jaer / trecht ghelog in Jesum Christus Verheven / het welck Godt u en ons allen wil geven. [...]'. Other two couplets follow, one in nine lines and the latter in eight, plus clausa. 60857 Incl. BTW € 605,00
